CALVING ROPE - NYLON - SINGLE
Calving ropes are soft, durable nylon loops designed to provide secure, low-trauma traction when assisting cows through difficult births (dystocia).
Hazard Analysis
- Bone Fractures and Joint Damage: Pulling on a single point of the leg or placing a loop directly over soft growth plates or joints can fracture the calf's leg.
- Tissue Laceration and Bruising: Rough, dirty, or twisted ropes cut into the cow's birth canal or damage the calf's skin.
- Excessive Force Injury: Pulling constantly or without matching the cow’s natural contractions can severely injure both the cow and the calf.
Operational Protocol
- Clean and Inspect: Use only washed, clean, and soft nylon ropes or straps before starting.
- Proper Placement: Attach the leg rope above the fetlock (second knuckle joint) and make sure the rope comes from the bottom of the foot with no twists.
- Distribute Pressure: Form a double-loop or half-hitch (loop above and below the joint) to spread the pulling tension evenly.
- Pull with Contractions: Only pull manually or via a mechanical aid in rhythm with the cow's natural contractions, resting when she rests.
