CMT REAGENT LIQUID - 1L
The CMT (California Mastitis Test) reagent liquid is a specialized diagnostic solution used cow-side to detect subclinical mastitis in dairy cattle, sheep, and goats by estimating somatic cell counts.
How It Works
- Cell Lysis: The anionic surfactant in the liquid breaks down cell membranes of somatic cells (white blood cells) present in infected milk.
- Gel Formation: Released nuclear DNA reacts with the reagent to form a gel or slime.
- Scoring: The degree of thickening corresponds to the severity of the infection, graded from negative (no change) to strong positive (thick, gelatinous mass).
Standard Testing Protocol
- Clean Teats: Ensure teats are clean and discard the first few squirts of foremilk from each quarter.
- Collect Milk: Squirt milk from each separate quarter into its designated well on a four-chambered CMT paddle.
- Measure Volume: Tilt the paddle to pour off excess milk until the liquid matches the inner marker line in the well.
- Add Reagent: Add an equal volume of CMT reagent liquid to each well up to the fill line.
- Mix and Read: Gently swirl the paddle in a circular motion for 10 to 30 seconds and read the results immediately within 20 seconds.
